Mountain Railway Darjeeling, West Bengal, India - An UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is popularly known as the Toy Train that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal, India. How to reach Jalpaiguri?

The train route passes Siliguri and Kurseong to reach Ghum / Ghoom, which is at a highest altitude on the route. The train has to climb up steeply via innumerable bridges (400+), curves, reverses and loops.

Operating since 1881 Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 2nd Dec 1999.

Note: Three Mountain Railways of India the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the Kalka–Shimla Railway, are collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Matheran Hill Railway is on a tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
